Installing a swing gate operator to "swing in" as in the normal way can cause a problem when the arm gets pinched between the gate and an oversized column. This would prevent full opening of the gate as well as damage the operator arm. Providing a "pocket" as shown here is only one option.
Below are photos of linear actuator arms recessed into pockets in the columns in order to keep from pinching the arms when the gates open.
