GTO Solar Applications

Find your proper zone on the map below, then check the solar chart at the bottom of the page for the model operator you plan to use.

Cycles per day are based on the maximum gate weight and length for the particular operator and assumes that the cycles will be spread out over a 12 to 14 hour period. If cycles are grouped in a shorter period, an optional larger battery and/or charger system may be needed to store more cycles.

The Chart below was created from GTO Installation Manuals for the various models.
FP295 Provides about 3˝ times the storage capacity in order to receive and store more cycles during periods of un-use so they are available during brief times of high use. Includes 24 amp batt, mounting plate & harness for GTO low voltage sliders. FP296 is for Swing operators.

To understand Solar Cycles, picture a piggy bank with 50 pennies in it. If you put in 4 pennies a day and take out 4 pennies a day, your original 50 pennies will remain constant. If you start removing more pennies than you return and don’t catch up soon, you will run out in a matter of time. This is how solar works. You are limited by the number of cycles you can return to the battery over a period of time. The returning number of cycles must meet or exceed the number of cycles used. The below chart gives the “returning cycles” produced on a winter day with minimum sunlight and the sun at an inefficient low angle. Spring, Fall & Summer return rate will be more. If your use of the operator is higher or lower on weekends, add your total cycles for the week and divide by 7 to get an average daily requirement rate. A new, fully charged, standard GTO Battery contains/holds 30 to 50 cycles depending on model used. In some circumstances, using an optional larger battery system  (FP295/FP296) will help store more cycles during periods of low use. These increased cycles will then be available later if needed. The addition of accessories will cause additional draw on the batteries. Some accessories may require extra solar wattage or separate transformers in order to keep the operator battery from being run down.

This Chart Does Not take into account the extra draw of optional accessories.
Cycles listed are for winter/minimum sunlight.
GTO Solar Chargers, available from DADS, provide charging voltage for  GTO/PRO Low Voltage Swing and Slide Gate Systems when properly connected to GTO low voltage control boards. Particularly suited for remote installations such as farms, cabins or ranches, the kits include solar panel, tubular steel support, mounting clips, wire connectors, and 9' of low voltage wire. Can be located up to 250’ from control box. All GTO low voltage operators are pre-wired to accept the optional solar charger.  Installations in some regions may require additional panels for best performance. If you are under 1000’ from 110 v. it may be more efficient to use the transformer. WARNING, some accessories may use too much power to be solar compatible. Call DADS if you have any questions regarding the number of solar panels your application may require.
